Why are supermarkets cheapest?
Supermarkets treat fuel as a loss-leader to drive footfall. They buy in enormous volumes and pass the savings on. A typical supermarket forecourt is 4–6p cheaper per litre than a branded station.

No. All UK forecourt fuel meets the same EN228 (petrol) and EN590 (diesel) standards. Supermarket fuel is identical in specification to BP or Shell — the difference is in premium additive packages, not base quality.
