Cookie Policy

What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. PumpItDown uses functional cookies to remember your search preferences between visits, and, only if you consent, analytics cookies (Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity) to help us understand how the site is used. We may also show adverts served by Google AdSense, which can set their own cookies.
On your first visit, a banner asks whether to accept or reject analytics cookies. Nothing beyond strictly necessary functional cookies is set until you choose. You can change your decision at any time via the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer of every page.
Your price history is always stored (regardless of the checkbox) so the chart works across visits. It contains only the cheapest prices you found — no postcode or location data.
Cookies we use
| Cookie name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| pumpitdown_remember | Stores whether you have ticked "Remember my choice". Controls all other preference cookie storage. | 30 days | Functional |
| pumpitdown_postcode | Stores your last searched postcode so it pre-fills on your next visit. Only set when "Remember my choice" is ticked. | 30 days | Functional |
| pumpitdown_radius | Stores your preferred search radius (e.g. 5 miles). Only set when "Remember my choice" is ticked. | 30 days | Functional |
| pumpitdown_sortby | Stores your preferred sort order (e.g. Petrol Price). Only set when "Remember my choice" is ticked. | 30 days | Functional |
| pumpitdown_pricehistory | Stores the cheapest petrol and diesel price you found on each day you searched, up to your last 10 search days. Used to display the "Your price history" chart. No postcode or location data is stored in this cookie, only the prices. | 90 days | Functional |
Analytics cookies (only with your consent)
We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use the site, so we can fix problems and improve it. These are non-essential and are only loaded after you click "Accept all" on the cookie banner. If you click "Reject non-essential", or don't respond, they are never loaded. You can change your choice at any time via the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer.
| Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics (GA4) | Anonymised usage statistics — pages visited, general location, device type — to understand how the site is used. | Up to 14 months | Analytics (consent required) |
| Microsoft Clarity | Session recordings and heatmaps to see how visitors interact with the site, so we can spot and fix usability issues. | Up to 1 year | Analytics (consent required) |
Browser localStorage (My Garage)
The My Garage feature uses your browser's localStorage rather than cookies. Vehicle registration numbers you add are stored locally on your device under the key pid_garage_v1. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly request a vehicle lookup, at which point the registration is forwarded transiently to UK Government APIs (DVLA and DVSA) to retrieve vehicle details. PumpItDown does not store registration numbers on its own servers. You can remove any vehicle at any time from within the Garage, or clear all data by clearing your browser's site data.
What data is stored?
The only personal data stored is your postcode, which is used solely to pre-fill the search box. Postcodes are stored as plain text in the cookie on your own device. They are not sent to any server or shared with any third party beyond the postcode lookup service (postcodes.io), which is used to convert postcodes to coordinates.
How to manage or delete cookies
The easiest way to stop cookies being stored is to untick "Remember my choice" on the search bar. This immediately deletes all stored preferences.
You can also delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. For guidance see ico.org.uk — Cookies .
Advertising cookies (Google AdSense)
PumpItDown displays advertisements served by Google AdSense. Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. These are third-party cookies set by Google, not by PumpItDown directly.
Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings, or you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies by visiting the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.
For more information on how Google uses data when you use our site, see How Google uses data from sites that use Google services.
Legal basis
Under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), cookies that are strictly necessary for a service the user has requested do not require consent. The functional/preference cookies described above fall into that category — they are entirely optional, can be disabled at any time via the "Remember my choice" checkbox, and are not used for any purpose other than saving your search preferences.
Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity) and any advertising cookies set by Google AdSense are not strictly necessary, so under PECR and UK GDPR we ask for your consent before they are set, via the cookie banner shown on your first visit. You can accept, reject, or change your choice at any time via "Cookie Settings" in the footer.
